The Lower Omo and the Konso highlands: market towns, river forest and some of the oldest human fossils known. Visited with local guides, on community terms, or not at all.
The Omo River runs south to Lake Turkana through some of the most diverse country in Africa, home to the Hamar, Banna, Ari, Dassanech, Kara, Nyangatom, Mursi and many other peoples. The Lower Valley of the Omo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its fossils; on the way down, the stone-walled towns of Konso are another.
Tourism here has a poor record: drive-in village visits arranged around paid photographs. We work only with guides from the area, go to markets as shoppers, and take visits that communities have agreed to. Please read our visiting rules before you enquire.
