01 · The place

ባሌ

The largest area of Afro-alpine moorland in Africa, home to more Ethiopian wolves than anywhere else, falling away into a cloud forest where coffee grows wild.

The Sanetti Plateau sits at about 4,000 metres: giant lobelias, heather, frost at dawn and glacial lakes. This is the stronghold of the Ethiopian wolf, Africa's most endangered carnivore, which hunts giant mole-rats here in the open. Below the southern escarpment the Harenna forest begins, one of the largest areas of moist tropical forest left in Ethiopia, with wild coffee under its canopy.

Bale is not a safari: there are no game drives and few vehicles. You walk or stand at the edge of the plateau in the cold first light and wait. It is worth it.

4,377 m
Tullu Dimtu, among the highest peaks in Ethiopia, rises from the plateau.
Endangered
The Ethiopian wolf is listed as Endangered by the IUCN; Bale holds the largest population.
Endemic
Mountain nyala, Menelik's bushbuck and the giant mole-rat are found nowhere else.

What we do here

Sanetti

Wolves before breakfast

An Ethiopian wolf resting among everlasting flowers beside a boulder on the Sanetti Plateau

Wolves are easiest to see in the first two hours after sunrise, when they hunt mole-rats across the open moorland. We leave in the dark, with hot coffee in the car, and stop where the rangers have seen them lately.

Gaysay

Nyala on the grassland

Around the park headquarters at Dinsho, the Gaysay grassland is the easiest place to see mountain nyala, Menelik's bushbuck and warthog, on foot with a park scout.

Harenna

Down into the cloud forest

A path into the green, moss-hung Harenna cloud forest

The road over the plateau drops 2,000 metres through heather and bamboo into the Harenna forest: lianas, colobus monkeys, and coffee bushes growing wild beneath the trees.

Sof Omar

The river caves

The Web River flowing through carved limestone passages in the Sof Omar caves

East of Robe, the Web River has carved one of the longest cave systems in Africa through limestone. A day trip for the curious, walked with a local guide.

04 · Getting there

Getting there, and the advice

We fly Addis Ababa to Bale Robe and drive about an hour to the park. The road from Addis is long and crosses East Shewa, where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel away from the main corridors, so we do not use it.

You sleep at around 3,000 metres. Take the first afternoon gently; we do not plan the plateau for your first morning in the park.

Before you write

Before you go

How cold is it?

Dawn on the Sanetti Plateau can be below freezing in the dry season, and the afternoons warm and bright. Bring a down jacket, a hat and gloves.

Are wolf sightings guaranteed?

No. Our guides see wolves on most clear dry-season mornings, but they are wild animals in a large landscape. We build in a spare morning.

What are the park fees?

Fees are set by the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority and change; we include them in your price and list the current figures in your quote.
